A few years ago, I had the privilege of attending an enlightening keynote address at a management symposium in Atlanta. The speaker, Jeff Nischwitz, founder of the Nischwitz Group, intrigued me with his unique title: a “snow globe shaker.” This unconventional descriptor piqued my curiosity, and I was eager to learn more.
Over the years, Nischwitz has cultivated a passion for snow globes, collecting them from his travels worldwide. He always brings a favorite globe on stage for his speaking engagements, and this day was no exception.
As he held a beautifully crafted globe depicting a lively town, he gave it a gentle shake. The audience watched in awe as tiny snowflakes cascaded, transforming the scene into a mesmerizing winter wonderland. Yet, within moments, the snow settled, and the magic faded, leaving us with a poignant metaphor.
Nischwitz explained that the transient beauty of the snow globe mirrors the cultural dynamics within organizations. Leadership often initiates campaigns to “shake things up,” aiming to foster a people-first culture that ignites passion and excellence. They craft mission and vision statements, reinvigorate core values, and form engagement committees. Celebrations are held, and employees receive tokens emblazoned with new cultural taglines. Initially, everything flourishes.
However, as time passes, the demands of daily operations, strategic shifts, and competitive pressures can erode this momentum. Just like the snowflakes settling in the globe, organizational energy diminishes, and morale can plummet.
To avoid this cyclical pattern, never settle for mediocrity. Strive to lead your company beyond good to exceptional. Make a profound impact on your customers' lives, and demand the best from yourself and your team. Don’t let the initial excitement fade—continue to shake the snow globe and embrace the transformative journey.
